Backgrounds
In this borderless era of globalization, where each nation is required to improve and collaborate with the other nations to establish its existence in the global world. Indonesian young generations should be capable of competing in such an era to catch up in terms of science and technology, by enrolling in several international-scale programs. College students as Indonesian assets, are not ideally limited to academic fields but also need to be given the access for global intellectual development.
Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) is one of Indonesian universities, the oldest university in Borneo Island inaugurated on November 1, 1960. At the beginning of its establishment, it had only 4 faculties and the Faculty of Engineering was the 7th faculty in ULM establishment in 1965. Now, ULM has 11 faculties and 105 study programs. Faculty of Engineering has 7 study programs, including Civil Engineering, Architecture, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Information Technology. In order to transform to an international standard university, Faculty of Engineering needs to actively participate and represent Lambung Mangkurat University in international programs.
Based on this background, the Memorandum of Understanding (Appendix-1) was made between the Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Lambung Mangkurat University (Prof. Dr. βIng Yulian Firmana Arifin) and the Dean of Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Saga University (Prof. Dr. Koji Ishibashi). The MoU ceremony and the signing process were undertaken in Saga on January 20, 2016.
Following the final MoU signed, both parties proposed the programs to be implemented. There were two planned programs in 2016, Sakura Science Program, Lecturer Advance Study, SPACE-E Program, followed by ASIAN Collaborative Lecture Program on Lowland Technology proposed in 2019. By the next year in 2021, University of Lambung Mangkurat gained the opportunity for Master Degree Program in Saga University with MEXT scholarship.
Purpose
- Improving the quality of education so that it can be equivalent to the quality of international education, especially in Saga, Japan
- Improving the quality of research, so it can be internationally recognized
- Improving knowledge and experience of students through SPACE-E Program, Sakura Science Program and Workshop of Lowland
- Improving competency and experience of lecturers through the Lecturer Advance Study Program
Saga University Program for Academic Exchange (2017 β on going)
Saga University Program for Academic Exchange (SPACE) is an annual short term program for one or two semesters maximum, where Lambung Mangkurat University sends student delegates to study and conduct research at Saga University. There are two kinds of SPACE programs, SPACE-E and SPACE-J. SPACE-E is the exchange program with the learning process is formulated in English, while SPACE-J is in Japanese language. Lambung Mangkurat University is enrolled in SPACE-E.
SPACE program basically offers a unique curriculum of a combination among academic curriculum of the same origin department, Japanese languages and cultures. The enrolled students are highly expected to extend knowledge and understanding in terms of their field of study, and/or Japanese languages through the academic process and interaction with Japanese students, and other international students from other countries. Besides classroom study, the exchange students also have a lot of field trips, and conduct research in the laboratory with their supervisors.
The objectives of this program are to improve the potential and science during the student exchange period at Saga University, both in terms of knowledge in field study, and become familiar with Japanese culture from the interaction with Japanese students and the local communities.
ASIAN Collaborative Lecture Program on Lowland Technology (November 2019)
ASIAN Collaborative Lecture Program on Lowland Technology is a collaboration program between Saga University, Lambung Mangkurat University (Indonesia), Hasanuddin University (Indonesia), Can Tho University (Vietnam), West Yangon University (Myanmar). The background of this program is the similarity of geographical conditions and contour, the issues, and challenges faced by these countries making this collaboration crucial in order to elaborate knowledge from each university.
The workshop included seminars and several field trips to directly observe the conditions in Saga city. The delivery of information related to lowland is not limited to from professors of Saga University as the host, but also from all participating nations. In addition to lowland technology, this workshop also gave the participants the opportunity to observe the construction or Ariake Coastal road from the piling process and soil studies to obtain the appropriate design, water treatment process, waste management, and historical places in Saga.
Sakura Science Program (November 2016)
Sakura Science Program is an exchange program organized by JST (Japan Science and Technology Agency) which invites youths from Asia and Latin America on a short span for the purpose of expanding interest in science and technology. One of Host Universities in Japan is Saga University, and Lambung Mangkurat University have participated to this program, in November 2016. Through this program, students can learn implementation of research field in Saga University, they will also be invited to several research locations around Saga Prefectures. In this program, students will meet other international students and exchange information and knowledge among them.
Lecturer Advanced Study Program (2016-2020)
Lecturer Advanced Study Program Is a program specifically for lecturers who want to continue their education at Saga University Japan. Through this program, lecturers can open wider opportunities to learn more in their fields of knowledge with professors at Saga University. Lecturers can also study the learning system and curriculum in Japan so they can imitate and apply it at Engineering Faculty, Lambung Mangkurat University. This program also opens the opportunity for both universities to establish research collaborations.
