The joint selection for admitting new students to PTNs through a national written exam that has been carried out so far shows various advantages and advantages, both for participants, PTNs, and for the national interest.

Based on experience in carrying out selection for new student admissions through written exams, in 2015 the Council of Chancellors of Indonesian State Universities (MRPTNI) continued to hold the 2015 SBMPTN written exam which can be taken by students who graduated from secondary education (SMA/MA/SMK/MAK) and equivalent. , including Plan C for 2013, 2014, and 2015.

The written exam uses test questions that are developed in such a way that they meet the requirements for adequate reliability and validity. The SBMPTN written exam questions are designed to measure basic abilities that can predict prospective students' success in all study programs, namely high-level reasoning abilities (higher order thinking), which includes academic potential, mastery of basic study fields, science and technology (saintek) and/or social and humanities (soshum) fields. Apart from taking the written exam, participants who choose the Arts and/or Sports Science study program are required to take a skills exam.
