Wetland Summer Course Program 2020

Backgrounds
Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) as the oldest university in the Borneo Island was inaugurated on November 1, 1960. At the beginning of its establishment, it had only 4 faculties and in 1965 the Faculty of Engineering was then established. The Faculty of Engineering is the 7th faculty in ULM establishment after the Faculty of Law (1960), the Faculty of Economics (1960), the Social Faculty (1960), the Faculty of Agriculture (1961), the Faculty of Fisheries (1964) , and the Faculty of Forestry (1964).

Located in an area dominated by wetlands, the University of Lambung Mangkurat (ULM) focuses on “wetland studies” as a principal scientific pattern. Furthermore, ULM has directed the teaching program, research and community service activities in the wetlands. Many researchers (outside ULM) also conduct a research regarding wetlands; all of which require a way for communication.

Indonesia's wetlands cover 31.4 million ha which are currently in the spotlight because of the potential of their development and the possible environmental impacts (if there is wrong management). Wetlands have long been used for agricultural development, food, horticulture and plantations. Wetlands also have the potential to become a renewable energy source as well as potential mining activities for energy materials.

Objective
The International Workshop and Student Exchange program is aimed at introducing to academics around the world universities especially for the students regarding the potential of wetlands in the South Kalimantan region in terms of education, research and aspects of local business and industry. The role of academics in the field of engineering in the development of the wetland environment is immensely needed; Hopefully, the International Workshop and Student Exchange programs can contribute in terms of science and further advanced research.

Agenda
International workshop activities will be carried out on August 24 – September 4 2020 in South Kalimantan, at the Faculty of Engineering, Banjarbaru. The Student Exchange program will be held for 1 semester in the period from 31 August to 23 December 2020 at the Department of Civil Engineering and Chemical Engineering.

Type of Program
A. International Workshop Program
The program is conducted through field studies; the students are involved in the theoretical and practical knowledge directly linked to their engineering abilities. The activities during the program are described as in Table 1; the funding of activities are described in Table 2.

B. Student Exchange Program
The program is implemented through lecture activities and pre-research guidance related to wetlands. The program was proposed for students conducting the 5th semester at the Civil Engineering and Chemical Engineering field. Two recipients of student exchange will obtain the scholarships for each field of Civil Engineering and Chemical Engineering. The funding of activities are described in Table 3.
