History
Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) was legally established as a state university on November 1 1960 based on Government Regulation Number 41 of 1960. At its inception, ULM only consisted of 4 (four) faculties, namely: Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Social Affairs and Politics, and Faculty of Agriculture.
The Faculty of Engineering, Lambung Mangkurat University was founded in 1965. The Faculty of Engineering is the 7th Faculty established at Unlam after the Faculty of Law (1960), Faculty of Economics (1960), Faculty of Social Affairs (1960), Faculty of Agriculture (1961), Faculty of Fisheries (1964 ), and Faculty of Forestry (1964). When the Faculty of Engineering was founded, Unlam had already become a State University with 2 locations, namely Banjarmasin and Banjarbaru. The Faculty of Engineering was first established in Banjarbaru.
The Faculty of Engineering was founded based on Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number 296/65 dated 27 December 1965, and refined based on Decree Number 75/Bikuk/1966 dated 25 July 1966. The first department formed at this Faculty was Department of Civil Engineering.
From 1968 to 1983, the educational process at the Faculty of Engineering, especially at the Bachelor level (DIII) and Bachelor level (S1), was carried out in collaboration with the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Yogyakarta by way of affiliation. This was because the Faculty of Engineering at that time had limited human resources. This affiliation process requires students studying at the Faculty of Engineering to become teaching staff at this Faculty after completing their education at undergraduate level. During its development, the Faculty of Engineering had 2 buildings (campuses) located in Banjarmasin City (1985) and in Banjarbaru City (1996).
The Architecture Study Program began in 1994 with the opening of the Diploma III Architecture Program to answer the many needs for professionals in the world of design and construction work. Public interest increases every year, as evidenced by the increasing number of students in each generation. The Diploma III Architecture program places more emphasis on aspects of skills, graphics and the correct application of construction structures.
In 1998 the lecturers prepared to establish the Architecture Study Program because they realized the importance for alumni of the Diploma III Architecture Program to continue their education. So in 1999 the Architecture Study Program was officially opened based on the Decree of the Director General of DIKTI No. 375/DIKTI/Kep./1998 dated 22 October 1998. From then on, the Diploma III Architecture Program was disbanded and the Architecture Study Program was developed.
In its development, currently FT-ULM has 12 study programs, as follows:
- Civil Engineering Undergraduate Study Program, established in 1965, based on Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number 296/65 dated 27 December 1965, and refined based on Decree Number 75/Bikuk/1966 dated 25 July 1966.
- Bachelor of Architecture Study Program, founded in 1999 based Director General of Higher Education Decree No. 375/DIKTI/Kep./1998 dated 22 October 1998.
- Civil Engineering Master's Study Program, founded in 2001 with Operational Permit No. 3133/D/T/2001 September 28, 2001.
- Mining Engineering Undergraduate Study Program, established in 2004 based on the Decree of the Director General of DIKTI No.3804/D/T/2004 dated 21 September 2004.
- Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Study Program, established in 2004 based on the Decree of the Director General of DIKTI No.3804/D/T/2004 dated 21 September 2004.
- Environmental Engineering Undergraduate Study Program, established in 2006 based on the Decree of the Director General of DIKTI, Ministry of National Education No.3062/D/T/2006.
- Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Study Program, established in 2006 based on the Decree of the Director General of DIKTI, Ministry of National Education 3964/D/T/2006 19 October 2006.
- Professional Engineer Program, founded in 2016 based Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education Regulation N0. 35 of 2016.
- Information Technology Undergraduate Study Program, standing grounded RI Minister of Education and Culture Decree No. 541/E/O/2014, with a Decree on Changing the Name of the Study Program No. 189/KPT/I/2017, 1 March 2017.
- Chemical Engineering Masters Study Program, founded in 2017 based Decree (SK) of the Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia Number 276/KPT/I/2017.
- Geological Engineering Undergraduate Study Program, established in 2022 based on  Decree (SK) of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia Number 769/E/O/2022, Dated October 19, 2022
- Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Study Program, established in 2022 based on   Decree (SK) of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia Number 865/E/O/2022, Dated November 22, 2022.
The Architectural Engineering Study Program was formed in Banjarmasin and then moved to Banjarbaru. Meanwhile, the Civil Engineering Study Program remains at the Banjarbaru location, as do other study programs.
On September 28 2001, the Civil Engineering Master's Study Program at Lambung Mangkurat University (PSMTS ULM) began to be held. The background for implementing this program is the need for superior and competent human resources in developing civil engineering-based technology. Such excellence and competence are fundamental in providing solutions to civil engineering problems. Meanwhile, certain areas in the world, such as Kalimantan, with all its characteristics which are dominated by swamp areas, wetlands and soft soil, require the availability of specific areas of expertise and technology. This expertise and knowledge is owned by PSMTS ULM, and is ready to be donated to the community through the master's curriculum packages taken by its students. Government agencies, private bodies, and individuals with an interest in the issues mentioned above are the main stakeholders who will reap direct benefits from the existence of the ULM PSMTS.
In 1999, the Mining Engineering Diploma II (D-2) Program was also established as the forerunner to the Mining Engineering Undergraduate Study Program. This Study Program was established based on the Decree of the Director General of DIKTI No. 3804/D/T/2004 dated 21 September 2004. This operational permit has been extended 2 (two) times, namely by Decree number 2481/D/T/2007 23 August 2007 which then extended again with Decree number 9416/D/T/KN/2011 on October 31 2011. The Mining Engineering Study Program accepted its first batch of students in 2005.
Apart from developing the study programs above, the Faculty of Engineering also plays a role in the management and establishment of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, with the issuance of a decree from the Director General of Higher Education regarding the opening of 4 study programs for Bachelor of Mathematics, Bachelor of Biology, Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and the Chancellor's decision regarding the opening of D3 Chemistry in the 2000 academic year/ 2001. The four Study Programs have started carrying out the teaching and learning process under the management coordination of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and are based at the ULM Complex in Banjarbaru. Based on the Decree of the Minister of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia number 147/O/2001 on September 11 2001, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences was officially established as the 10th (tenth) Faculty at ULM at that time.
In 2006, the Environmental Engineering Study Program was pioneered. Based on a survey of the Industry, Government Agencies in South Kalimantan, environmental experts are still very much needed with the specification of expertise in Environmental Management, Clean Water Supply Engineering, Wastewater Engineering, and Solid Waste Management. The proposal to establish the Environmental Engineering Study Program was approved by the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of National Education No. 3062/D/T/2006, and accredited with Accreditation Decree No. 001/BAN-PT/Ak-XIV/S1/V/2011.
In 2014 the Information Technology Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Lambung Mangkurat University was officially established in accordance with Implementation Decree No. 541/E/O/2014. The purpose of establishing the Information Technology Study Program is as a manifestation of Lambung Mangkurat University's active role in national higher education. ULM sees the field of computers and information technology as a field that needs to build a scientific foundation within the ULM environment.
